"Roy Good is one of the undisputed pioneers of late modernism in New Zealand. And we’re proud to announce our representation of this well-respected and much loved artist.
After recent acclaimed shows of his Gothic Series at Northart, Auckland and Chambers Gallery, Christchurch, Roy has spent lockdown in his studio, reflecting on his practice, and exploring new – and unresolved – ideas.
I have a particular fondness for Roy’s powerful minimalist works from the 1970’s onwards; hard-edged, gently nuanced, but always pristine and supremely elegant (just wait until you see them close up). To me, they feel as timeless as the day they were painted.
What’s exciting about the work I’ve shown here, ‘Squares Cascade - Grey / Blue Fuge’, 2021 is that it’s entirely new, and only painted during the last few weeks. Inspired by a small study he did back in 1991 (which I admittedly got very excited by during a studio visit earlier this year) it’s living proof that painting genres never ‘die’ – they really just get better with age, especially when a new generation of viewers interacts with them with fresh perspectives.
Roy says that this new series of paintings embodies a genuine ‘back to basics’ approach – a pattern of working professional artists often deploy when looking back through various bodies of work in their careers. This has formed the theme of these paintings, and we can't wait to share the results with you in Roy’s solo show next year.
I’m also pleased to announce that Roy Good will headline our Aotearoa Art Fair opening with a mix of both old and new works (a ‘mini-survey if you like) to showcase significant paintings from the past 50 years to the present."
